Importance of reading a credit report

One of the most important things that can be done in order to ensure the protection of your financial well being, is to keep up with the credit score. Reading a credit report is a vital skill that you need to learn for doing this. The first thing you need to know is how to pull a credit report, before you learn how to read it. There are three credit-reporting agencies from where you can pull out credit reports every year. If you want to learn reading a credit report then you need to contact those three agencies and request for the reports or get it online. Once you have pulled out the report and you start reading it you will realize that it is broken into four major sections:

• Identifying information
• History
• Public records
• Inquiries.

As you proceed in learning how to read it, check all the sections for accuracy. The identifying information section should have your social security number and name. The second section that is history is very important in the process of reading a credit report. Each lender in that report should have some basic information related to the accounts that you have opened with them. Here, it is vital to read the report. Lender entries should have the date on which the account was opened, the kind of credit it is, name of the co-borrower if any, how much money you owe, the total limit, minimum amounts or fixed payments, status of the account and whether you will be making the payments on time or not.

The history section is the most important of the credit report. As you learn to read a credit report, make sure that you have an idea about how to dispute things that are not accurate. You need to contact both the lenders along with the reporting agency for fixing errors. Public records section will include incidents like arrests and bankruptcy. It is the best thing to find this section blank when you are reading a credit report because the inquiry will relate to the hits on your credit history from lenders.
